Organic cot bedding

Organic cot bedding

Out of concern for the well being and health of your growing baby and desire to care for our environment, you consider what food your baby eats. Have you considered where your baby sleeps? Babies sleep for about 70 percent of their first year, so the cot bed and bedding are really important. A baby’s skin is more porous and thinner than that of an adult and has the potential to absorb residues more easily. They are also more vulnerable than adults to chemical-overload because they are small and still growing.

It is natural that we would want the place where they might spend most of their time to be as natural as possible. You might want to start with the cot bedding, as this comes in to immediate contact with your baby’s skin. Organic baby bedding is good for baby’s sensitive and delicate skin because it is made of organic natural fibres and is completely toxic free.

There are also good economic reasons for going organic when it comes to buying your baby’s bedding. Quality organic cotton baby bedding is strong and durable because it is made from long staple fibres, so will last and last through washing. Given how often baby bedding gets washed, this means organic bedding needs to be replaced less often than the non-organic which has been made with short staple, less strong fibres.

There are wider benefits too:

As well as safely swaddling your little one, organic fabrics are traceable, protect the environment, reduce chemical sprays and toxins for farmers and ensure fair trade.

In contrast, conventional cotton crops are sprayed with a well documented 25 percent of the world’s pesticides on 2.5 percent of farmed land from the time it is grown and a variety of chemicals to the point where it is made in to fabric. Spending all this time in bed, you want to ensure that these chemicals cannot come in to contact with or be absorbed through baby’s sensitive skin.

Where to buy?

There are a growing number of shops where you can buy organic bedding. One of the simplest ways of finding a selection of organic bedding for your baby’s bedroom is online at the specialist eco friendly baby, nursery and organic bed linen retailers. Look out for certified bedding - UK Soil Association certify to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), proof of quality and that no toxic chemicals are involved anywhere in making the bed linen.

Fou furnishings ® ‘little fou’ baby and children’s organic cotton bedding is in high-quality, super soft 330 thread count. The appliquéd and embroidered limited edition designs are completely toxic free and gentle for sensitive skins.  One of India’s longest established organic companies produced the bedding collection.  So good, it won the best organic textile finalist award on the planet.

So when buying organic bedding for your child, rest very well assured that you are doing your best for your little ones and the planet, even when you and they are asleep.
