From Copenhagen to organic cotton bedding, what environmentally do they have in common

Why choose organic bedding?

From Copenhagen to organic cotton, what environmentally do they have in common? If you have gone organic in parts of your life, but never thought about organic bedding, read on as to why it makes sense. As a recent reviewer commentated, “Why would you want to sleep in something that has been poorly made by underpaid staff and steeped in chemicals?” Conventional cotton producers consume $2.6 billion worth of pesticides; more than 25% of the world’s pesticides on 2.5% of farmed land.  It’s not just about chemicals and Fairtrade. Why would you not want to sleep in soft, silky, comfortable organic cotton bedding that has been made from beautiful quality Egyptian organic cotton, by fairly paid producers? Also guaranteed to have used no allergy inducing chemicals.

What is organic bedding?

Certified 100% organic cotton bedding starts with natural cotton fibres which have been grown without the use of chemicals, synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Only cotton from verified, organically cultivated, sustainable sources can be used, a process which takes a farmer three years to attain. The natural fibre must then be treated and finished using only natural and biodegradable means such as non-toxic bleaching or eco-dyes to arrive at the finished article versus conventional cotton which can be treated with a series of chemicals from the field to the finished product. Certification gives assurance at every stage of the cotton’s journey from field to the finished product on quality, absence of toxic chemicals and the payment and working conditions of producers. In the UK, the leading certification body is the UK Soil Association who adheres to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Certifications by bodies such as the UK Soil Association or Oeko-Tex not only offer the consumer assurance on the organic integrity and quality of the bed linen but also guarantee no irritating nasties.

Why choose organic bedding?

Choosing organic cotton isn’t just a change in bed linen, but a change in attitude and one which is about value, not just in ethics, but also lasting comfort and value for money.  Not to mention the apparent relief it gives to allergy sufferers and reducing carcinogenic chemicals.

The wider benefits of certified organic cotton are much quoted: decreased chemical exposure due to the absence of pesticides, chemical fertilisers or toxins which affect growers’ health and income, allergy sufferers and the environment. As well as being considerate to the environment and the people involved in growing and processing the cotton, certified organic cotton bedding collections also offer the consumer original design and natural, lasting quality for different budgets and for classic or contemporary interiors. Given we spend around eight hours in bed; choosing organic, chemical-free bedding offers the comfort of a great night’s sleep and is often the bed linen of choice for those with sensitive skins; with the added benefit that the product you are buying is from fair and sustainable cotton sources.

Why choose Fou Furnishings ®?

Fou Furnishings is (GOTS) certified by the UK Soil Association, License number DK20268, the UK’s leading certification body and environmental charity. All their organic cotton bedding has been made with great care – from the original design, choice of long staple cotton fibres which are inherently strong, to the finished product. The company deals only in high thread counts which need to be woven from long staple fibres such as Egyptian organic cotton which is renowned for its quality. Bed linen fabrics which are woven with long staple fibres inherently contain the natural strength, softness and durable quality of the fibre which will withstand frequent laundering outlasting those fabrics made from inferior or shorter staple cottons. All of their linens are certified by either the UK Soil Association or Oeko-Tex and have been specified and independently tested by Fou Furnishings for performance against the company’s own and external standards e.g. colourfastness, shrinkage, pilling and allergy inducing dyestuffs.

Fou Furnishings’ linens are available in three qualities in very high thread counts of 330 to 475 and luxurious finishes which means their linens are gorgeously soft and comfortable against your skin and will withstand frequent laundering and still look great. Choose from organic essentials sateen, crisp percale or lustrous Italian sateen for different budgets and classic or contemporary bedrooms. A recent reviewer experience of sleeping in Fou Furnishings’ elsa bed linen was described, “felt as though I was sleeping on a cloud, or at least in a really wish boutique hotel. The product washes really well too.”

For readers who want to sample organic bedding, the company would be delighted to send out swatches of their linens. Simply visit www.foufurnishings.com and click on ‘request sample’ or call T: 0141 644 5211 for friendly service and information.

Fou Furnishings’ organic bedding product review & Christmas gifts

November 17th, 2009

So much going on recently, that my blog has been neglected. Getting our new Christmas gift range launched, ‘Fou for you’, new channels and geographies opening up such as North America, organic B&B’s and hotels, as well as allergy related and a couple of great product reviews. The first to mention is our Elsa 400 thread count organic cotton percale bedding, which appeared in ‘hello eco living’, entitled “Create your own boutique hotel at home” available at http://helloecoliving.com/magazine/. To quote, “I felt as though I was sleeping on a cloud, or at least in a really swish boutique hotel. The product washes really well too. ….So, it’s organic bedding all the way for me…”
Had a great one too from a journalist, whose son has allergies, “The monochrome bedding did arrive, …and my son is really enjoying it! It really is beautiful quality, and he is delighted with it against his skin as it’s not the least bit itchy the way other covers have been.”

From Mumbai to the MOBOS, Organic Cotton Bed linen from Fou Furnishings travels the Distance

September 30th, 2009

Busy times in Fou Furnishings, so blogging has taken a back seat of late due to international expansion, the MOBOS,  the organic hospitality trade, not forgetting our design-a-duvet competition and our forthcoming gift range.

Our latest news is that Fou Furnishings’ luxury organic cotton bed linen, sourced from one of the oldest Indian farming co-operatives, based near Mumbai, featured in the break out area of the MOBOS along with another Scottish luxury, organic company - www.purelochside.com.
We are expanding our international presence and are now shipping competitively to the United States and France. Our unique Boutis brought back memories of her original wedding bedspread for one customer. We had a length of Boutis especially woven in Italy for a US based interior designer to be made into a made-to-measure Boutis bedspread. All part of our bespoke sourcing service. We are also hoping to be stocked online soon in a US based organic emporium based in Washington State. Our latest international shipment was our 475 thread count, organic Egyptian cotton Elisabetta range to Paris.
On the organic hospitality front, we had a repeat order from a gorgeous, luxury, organic  B&B based in Keswick, a guest had commented on the organic bed linens in the visitor book - www.briarrigghouse.co.uk. We are also developing our eco luxury credentials and taking out Associate Sponsorship of the Considerate Hoteliers Association Awards which start next month and hope to go out very soon with a special offer for hospitality establishments looking to source luxury, hotel quality, organic linens.

Sharpen your pencils as our ‘design-a-child’s-duvet’ competition ends on the 5th of October and we have already had some fantastic entries from across the country. So not to late to get designing and get 20% off or linens.

To finish, we will be launching our brand new Christmas range in the coming weeks, featuring a range of specially selected, originally designed and fun gifts, all using natural, recycled or eco materials sourced from designer to organic makers. We will have eco gifts for him, for her, children and stocking fillers from £3.99 upwards.

Organic cotton, not just a change in bed linen

June 30th, 2009

This is my first serious attempt at blogging in what is intended to be a regular feature on themes related to organic textiles and fou furnishings: organic cost and price premiums, certification, benefits, quality, sustainability, supply chain transparency, social justice and the environment to name a few.  The aim of the blog is to be exploratory – please feedback your organic perceptions, questions and comments – as well as topical.

In this credit crunch, the first theme of foublog had to be organic costs and price premiums.

From blogs to the bioscience industry, the FT to the UK Soil Association, there is a growing debate on the costs and benefits of organic agriculture - versus other crop forms - and how the associated costs of going organic translate into a premium priced product on the shelves, which consumers are also questioning the benefits of.

Whilst the debate is focused on food, cotton is an agricultural crop, dependent on a global production system which has also been subject to questions and debate in terms of its transparency and impact. The organic cotton production system does have transparent benefits along the supply chain - the ideal organic cotton model is driven by the aim of providing environmental, economic and social benefits - which add cost.

The real costs along the organic cotton supply chain relate to certification, at all stages, to provide an assurance to all of ‘green’ quality and integrity without any ‘greenwash’.  The cost and price premium for organic cotton products can be illustrated in a cotton T-shirt.  Documented studies highlight that the cotton raw material in a T-shirt accounts for only a small proportion of the retail price at 7.9%, or an extra 15p on a £7 T-shirt if only the absolute cost is added on. A small cost for organic cotton. The greatest proportion of value goes to the end retailer and using conventional retail pricing, a multiplier effect further increases the cost of organic along the supply chain to the final price.

But what of the cost and value to the end consumer? With regard to cost, many organic textile retailers will look to absorb much of the cost of certification to ensure a competitive product, in terms of price and performance.  Value relates to the quality and durability of a product, not just price. The quality of cotton, in bed linen as in T-shirts, comes down heavily on thread count, weaves and finishes and is generally reflected in the price. Fou Furnishings ® bed linen is certified 100% organic cotton, independently tested against standard performance measures for cotton, as well as traceability and the absence of toxins. Our original, organic cotton range is available in three qualities: organic essentials, percale and premium for different bedrooms and budgets. Our 475 organic Egyptian cotton range, elisabetta, is made from the finest organic cotton fibre and finishing we could source and the bed linen was described by New Consumer as ‘beautiful, durable and ooze(ing) quality’.

The benefits of certified organic cotton are much quoted: the absence of pesticides, chemical fertilisers or toxins which affect growers’ health and income, allergy sufferers and the environment; and the presence of economic and social assurances that working conditions and payments are fair. More about the benefits of organic cotton in a future blog.

Choosing organic cotton isn’t just a change in bed linen, but a change in attitude and one which is about value, not just in ethics, but also lasting value for money.

Now going through the process of adding on to technorati.com xgmeahj73p and social media sites.
